Hello and welcome to part one of my four or five billion (and shrinking!) part series:

Better Know a Creationist

This is where I search for that untapped majority: those who believe that the entire universe was magically created by one being, and see what it is that makes them tick. Or suggest some supplementary reading, maybe NON-fiction this time.

This time? Hailing from the IMDB forums: “martytamu27″. His post was in response to my suggestion that he read up a bit on “evolution”, as he didn’t seem to have really researched the process, nor did he display very much knowledge on “natural selection”. You see, despite his apparent lack of understanding of the terms, he definitely didn’t hesitate to tell me how CRAZY it was to believe that maybe, rather than just being dropped onto the planet like units in StarCraft, lifeforms evolved over a massive amount of time, slowly but surely becoming gradually more complex but never perfect. He assured me he is not religious but the universe seems way too complex to have been started by evolution (note: evolution is not nor has it ever been a theory as to the absolute origin of life or the universe). In short, he used the phrase “random occurrence” to refer to the gradual process of evolution, so I suggested that it wasn’t that simple.

He said (in two posts):

“i know all about evolution and how we adapt…but how did it all begin?
theres too much complexity for it to have begun by two cells dividing and all life springing forth from that.
i never said or believe that they dont appreciate the natural world…they probably do moreso than many religious people…but to not believe there is some kind of higher power creating all this is a stretch…has there been enough time for all of this to evolve starting with one cell that somehow waw bestowed with the life force by accident or random occurence?
going back millions and millions of years the living mammels then, their bodies were amazinign complex, as much as ours today…they only differnce is the intelligence in humans…where did that come from? adn so quickly?
and we dont understand so much of how the body works or why it does things that it does…this amazing level of complexity could not have just naturally evolved from one cell. thats why i believe that there is so creator.
I dont have all the answers, no one does, and i do understand how things work, but how did it start? that is the question that goes unexplained.
im not religious at all, but im not an atheist

and i am a scientist…i have degrees in chemistry and aerospace engineering….so i understand that…you misread my post…the randomness refers to how things were created. i understand and can see how evolution works…but that is more adapting to surroundings, not a new life form evolving. a favorable random mutation, if sucessful and so on….but it isnt explained that easily in real l ife…it happens much more faster than that and the adaptations occur much more quickly than just waiting for a random favorable mutation to occur.
There is much we dont understand adn cant explain.
so whats your opinion on how it all began?
from one cell? that came alive from atoms and molecules that came to gether randomly that somehow formed life?”

My reply is thus:

But the problem with that stance is that if you think that the universe’s complexity is at a level that requires some sort of creator, than such a creator would therefore have to be so complex that IT would require its own creator, and so on and so on.

And again, just because no-one has every absolute answer doesn’t mean that one PARTICULAR blanket answer (with, I’d like to add, the least evidence of any of the proposed explanations for the origin/development of life) is more likely to be true. Just because, for example, I don’t know exactly how the dinosaurs died out, this does not mean that it’s more likely that Superman moved them to another planet to make room for humans.

Furthermore, you use the complexity of the universe to justify belief in a god, but wouldn’t that be a pretty simple explanation for something so complex. And again I encourage you to do some research on evolution because it is definitely not as simple as “everything just naturally evolving from one cell”, a statement that leads me to question your claimed scientific expertise.

And by “so quickly” you DO know you’re referring to billions of years. So billions of years is “so quickly” but seven days, a much shorter amount of time, is sufficient time?

In relation to your comment that the difference between prehistoric mammals and humans is one of intelligence only, again I question your scientific credentials if that’s what you think

For example, whales used to be land-based mammals, and over millions of years became the aquatic dwellers we know them to be today. That’s a fact. Hell, I remember being introduced to it in elementary school, and I went to a Catholic school (but in Ontario Canada so much more about the “Jesus loves you” than the “burn in hell fags”). Is that not an example of a species (specifically, a mammal much larger than us) evolving drastically over millions of years? Why didn’t the creator make them this way to begin with?

Believing evolution isn’t just the “other side” of a coin with religious beliefs. It’s not a 50/50 chance, nor is evolution as a concept anywhere near as simple as you’re attempting to make it (perhaps with the intention of belittling the complexity of the idea in order to make creationism seem more so). It’s like the difference between believing that gravity exists and believing that earth is covered by invisible vines that pull us down when we try to escape. No, I can’t prove that there are no invisible vines, but I think I’ll stick with the gravity thanks.

And why do I HAVE to have an opinion on how it all began? I don’t KNOW how it all began. When you don’t know something that doesn’t give you a license to just make up some B.S. explanation for it. I. Don’t. Know. Go ahead, say it, it’ll make you feel better. You won’t DIE if you admit that you don’t know how the universe began. Nobody will laugh at you if you admit you don’t know how life originated. You know why? Because YOU DON’T KNOW. Every creationist that uses “you don’t know how it all began” is completely MISSING the face that he or she is claiming to know that very fact.

Seriously, it’s really not that big of a deal to admit that you have no idea how the world began, it makes you seem much less foolish than someone who insists that an invisible deity magically did it.

Note how Marty OPENED with “how did it all begin?” Evolution is not in any way related to answering that question, but that’s what he started with. Why? Because creationists, who are finally understanding that the “theory” of evolution has more evidence than you could shake a fossil at, are now employing the brilliant tactic of changing the subject entirely to one that science hasn’t made nearly as much headway on. Evolution refers to the development of organisms, not the beginning of the known universe. In fact, aren’t the only people who really claim they “know” how the whole matter thing happened are creationists? Why would creationists continue to attack, in essence, their own level of certainty? The thinking, I assume, that if they can get an atheist to say “I don’t know”, their point is proven.

For the record, it isn’t. Say it with me:

MY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT CANCEL OUT YOUR LACK OF EVIDENCE.

Til next time!

Well in my triumphant return to the little blog that won’t, I feel I should comment on the Star Trek movie that gave us all orgasms a few months ago. However, this will not be a review post, no that would be too late (IT’S FUCKING AUGUST) and too easy (IT WAS FUCKING ACE – REVIEW OVER).

No, dear reader(s), what I will do is what no man has done before. I hereby TAKE ON the Trek Army (of which I am occasionally a part) and their ONE seeeeeemingly valid complaint about this fantastic movie. So pop on your spock ears, redshirt, and spoiler hat and say it with me:

“THIS MOVIE ERASED FORTY YEARS OF TREK HISTORY crycrycrycry NO MORE KHAN crycrycry etc and so forth”

To THAT, I defer to my esteemed colleague, Lex Luthor:

he just says it so well...

They didn’t erase it, they just created a new history that exists alongside it. Star Trek as it has been from TOS, Next Gen, DS9 Voyager and Enterprise still exists and moves along as normal (except, apparently, without Romulus as of the events post-Nemesis and pre-Trek 2009), but now with the existence (and awareness – at least by Spock Prime) of this new alternate dimension. For the purposes of this post, the ORIGINAL Star Trek universe and all references to its concepts, characters, races, etc will be “prime” (Trek Prime, Spock-Prime, Khan Prime, and so forth) whereas anything that did not exist in any form before the Abrams movie is “New Trek”, or “New Kirk” or “New Sulu” or what have you.

That being said, as of this movie the following possibilities now exist for the franchise (whether intended by Abrams and Co. or not):

1. New outcomes and interactions with “New” universe’s versions of existing characters and stories, ie New-Kirk and crew meeting with New-Khan and that event transpiring differently than we all remember from Wrath of Khan. The “new” timeline, already being so different from the “primeline”, would obviously severely alter the circumstances of their relationship (having already done so), but with New-Kirk being so damn close to Kirk-Prime, it is reasonable to assume that not only does a New-Khan exist in the Abramverse, but (aside from looking a whole lot less like Ricardo Montelbahn) he is probably similar enough to Khan-Prime that SHOULD the Abram guys choose to venture in that direction the results would likely be amazing. Of course, I doubt we’ll see anything of Khan in the Abramverse (beyond maybe “for the fans” hints of his existence) in future films, since it would no doubt create the perception among audiences that Abram was re-making Wrath of Khan.

Regardless, Trekkies/ers everywhere can be a bit less antsy now that it is clear that beloved Khan has NOT been wiped out by evil JJ. Furthermore, though this point has been very Khan-centric, this “new old characters” rule applies to any character that has existed, died, or died-then-existed-again in the “Primeline”. There are/will be “new timeline” versions of everyone from Picard to Chekotay to the Borg Queen in this universe whether Abrams acknowledges them or not. The only people who have been “wiped” anywhere in THIS timeline are any born on Vulcan-Prime at any time after the events of Trek 2009 had taken place. On the note of billions of dead Vulcans, we move to:

2. Completely new directions, characters, and storylines, as the creation of this new universe (complete with drastic events such as the end of Vulcan) could mean anything from the “New Crew” meeting a race that even Picard Prime, Janeway Prime and Kirk Prime would never have encountered to making contact with something like the Borg much much earlier or even a much earlier Klingon truce, hell even “New Trek” universe’s version of Nero will eventually one day exist, try explaining the events of Trek 2009 to THAT sourpuss Romulan. LOLS. This kind of overlaps with point 1, but where point 1 referred to different interpretations of events happening (roughly) around the same time they did in Trek-Prime, this one considers the possibility of New-Trek’s chronology being VERY different, or New-Trek’s characters being exposed to things that either don’t EXIST in Trek-Prime, or that Trek-Prime’s crews have yet to encounter.

3. Characters and ideas from “Trek Prime” could somehow find their way into the “New Trek” universe, just as Nero, and Spock-Prime did. Likewise, characters from “new Trek” could end up in the universe of “Trek Prime”. This allows anyone or anyTHING from either canon to jump across to the other either accidentally (which is the only way it’s been done so far) or intentionally. Imagine if, shortly after the events of, say, First Contact, some Borg jumped into a space-time rift of some sort and ended up in federation space as known by the New-Trek universe, or if New-Spock was propelled into the Trek-Prime universe and had to answer for the absence of their Spock. Hell, I remember hearing that Shatner didn’t want Kirk-Prime to stay dead, so maybe he ended up in the Abramverse before even Spock-Prime and Nero (though I still think having Shatner in Abrams-trek would be ill-advised unless planned SUPER properly).

If they chose to go the whole nine, they could slowly build to a method of conscious travel between the two ‘verses, and the Federation could, in theory, expand to cover not only all the planets it already does but two separate realities. A lot of people seem to think that, somehow, the Primeline was annihilated by this film and only Spock and Nero (avec crew) made it into the New Timeline, but Trek-Prime still exists, probably without any awareness of the Abramverse’s existence. Sure, SPOCK hasn’t found a way to get back to it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. In fact, Abrams and his writers managed to create a situation where two nearly identical (as universes go) Trek-Realities exist, one with Romulus and one with Vulcan. He could use THAT to set the tone for the differences that will surely develop between the two, as a universe without a Romulus would surely function much differently than a universe without Vulcan.

Confused? Me too, but also excited, since if you actually think about what this movie means to Star Trek for like ten minutes you can really understand how many possibilities for invention and expansion there are for this franchise. It just seems that a lot of Trekkies/ers seem to view this “New” timeline as one that’s REPLACING the one that’s existed for the last 40 years, when actually the two exist side by side. I’m pretty sure that Abrams (maybe accidentally) turned Star Trek into something with a WHOLE lot more room for imagination, and any Trekkie worth a Tribble should be able to see that this is the best thing to happen to Gene’s baby since Riker’s sexy sexy beard.

Be back soon, live long and prosper, and may the force be with you.

Peace/Love,

~Nick

…for now

Of course I’m talking about The Noble Truths, featuring myself as well as talented soundsmiths Brendan Teskey, Alexsei Borda, and Alex Metcalfe. I would describe our sound as somewhere between Awesome and Spectacular, in the vein of the Beatles, Kinks, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, and other staples of the rock community. We have this crazy idea that rock music is supposed to be fun, creative, and original. Sorry Nickelback.

The music we have thus far is HERE: The Noble Truths Myspace

Those three songs will be on the first album, tentatively titled The Noble Truths Suit Up, and the disc is aimed to come out in spring of 2010. If you like them, and I’m pretty sure that you DO. You should come see us on May 30th at the Cat’s Eye, located at 150 Charles Street West in Toronto. We’ll be playing “Just A Ride”, “Love on the Line”, and “The Story Collector”, as well as new songs like “For Their Eyes Only” and “I Wanna Know”.

A lot of people, myself included, complain about how watered down and castrated music is now, and rightfully so. We, the Noble Truths, actually think we can do something about that. We think what everyone wants is to just enjoy music again. After all, it’s been a while.

Time for a review!

ON?

X-Men Origins:Wolverine!

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen the movie yet, please do so. I’ll wait…

Oh good, you’re back!

Now that just about everyone has had their say on this year’s first actual summer action film (sorry, Mr. Diesel), I feel it is an appropriate time for me to express MY opinion on this film, mostly by going through what everyone else said and pointing out either how brilliant and insightful it is, or how it is so far off-base that it’s playing golf (and… not baseball at all… see?).

Anyway, in this case, the word has been mixed, both from bullshit film critics whose favourite “X-Man” is somehow Green Lantern and from asshole fanboys who, if dissatisfied with the result, only pay to see these movies eight or nine times.

From my small corner of the internets, some of the most frequent comments/complaints are as follows:

GAMBIT

Everyone has been all about hating on Gambit in this movie, though an increasing amount of people are actually saying some nice things about the Cajun’s first film appearance. The biggest gripe about Gambit seems to be his appearance being altered notably for the movie. Fair point, nerdlies, but I retort with this: would you REALLY have been happier if THIS hopped on the screen?

Oh shit, it's Gambit.

For comics? It’s pretty bad-ass, and it worked great on the 90s show, but that hairstyle and black face-hugging sock thing just can’t be in a live-action movie without having the bad guys die from laughing at it. Therein lies Gambit’s problem, he’s too sexy to be reproduced by a person. I was happy that they kept mon ami’s “glowy red eyes” when he was powering shit up. Personally, if your knickers are in a twist over Gambit’s appearance then you best have been e-mailing Bryan Singer begging for Wolverine to be rocking the yellow spandex in X-Men, since what they did to ol’ Remy is no different than the other films wrapping up the X-Men in sleek leather ensembles. Even the voice, though not as “French” as some had hoped, had a perfectly acceptable drawl that sounded like dude was from New Orleans. Again, I didn’t hear bitching when the previously American (or at least American-accented in the cartoon anyway) characters of Xavier and Magneto were played by English stage veterans Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan. In fact, a lot of the problems people have with Wolverine seem to be problems that exist in the first installment of the series.

THE ACTING WAS BAD

I disagree. Aside from Will.I.Am proving he belongs even less in film than in music, the performances were pretty solid, with Liev Schreiber doing the best as pleasant surprise Sabretooth (more on him later), followed by Jackman (who knows Wolverine pretty well by now) and Reynolds’s brief (but promising) Wade Wilson.

DEADPOOL

Yeah, they fucked up Deadpool. Spoiler alert: they gave him a bunch of weird powers and made him into an even weirder weapon thing. The bright side? Although it was a pretty severe screw-up designed solely to create an action sequence, it’s fixable. Deadpool in the comics has SOME of the funky powers given to him by Stryker’s science-goons (who even admitted that most of them “weren’t permanent” in a nice exit strategy for the eventual Deadpool movie.), but the important thing is that he got chopped up real nice so he can heal it away and just go crazy already. A Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds, that breaks the fourth wall and whose biggest problem is some unwanted mutant abilities is much better than some of the ways it could have gone. Considering what some people have done to comic movies over the years, I’m surprised that “Deadpool” didn’t refer to an actual pool (like with liquid and maybe a diving board) that the bad guys put people in to kill them or something. At least they didn’t turn Wade into the unsaveable mess that Sabretooth was in the first X-Men. Speaking of which,

SABRETOOTH

Awesome performance by Liev Schreiber, but that’s not what I need to talk about. Few things in the world are more depressing than watching something awesome that you know is destined to be ruined by shittiness. Watching Liev totally get into Sabretooth and understand the point of his relationship with Wolverine was very sad, as I know that chronologically in this movie franchise, he becomes the bumbling moron that follows Magneto around in the first movie and then gets tossed off the Statue of Liberty after like five words of dialogue the whole movie. THIS is why the Deadpool complaints are, in my view, a bit over-dramatic. At least a Deadpool movie can sort out the important shit, but they’ll never be able to UN-make the first X-Men. Why they even included Victor in that movie is beyond me, they completely neutered the character and turned him into something similar to the Batman and Robin version of Bane. A great villain reduced to an idiotic henchman. If nothing else, Wolverine shows us that Sabretooth is an amazing character that CAN be done and done well. Gah! It’s like Rogue, I have no clue why Singer even put her in those movies if they were going to do shit-all with her, they HAVE a character to be a whiny annoying brat that’s no real help to anyone, and her name is Jubilee dammit!

All in all, I didn’t expect a whole lot going into Wolverine, especially after the cinematic abortion that was X-Men 3, and maybe that’s why I enjoyed it as much as I did. Lots of annoying flaws to be sure, and not as good as X2, but a perfectly decent action movie that’s miles better than the third one, and at least on par with X-Men, which I obviously have some problems with. Worth paying to watch at least once, but as for repeat viewings, that’s probably better decided after you’ve seen it once. HOWEVER, if you’re one of those five people that hasn’t seen this OR Star Trek, watch this first, because yeah, Star Trek is just something special, but more on that next time, mwahahahahahahaha.

A fictional account of events that would have been real had they actually happened.

I awoke at 7:30, as is normal on a Monday. I quickly got ready to head to my absolute favourite class ever, my Monday morning “writing for the web” class, but before speeding off to the bus stop, I was halted by my brother Steve.
“I need a ride,” Steve said.

“I can’t drive you, you know I have a class in half an hour,” I replied.

“I know, I know, and it’s the absolute greatest class ever, but I got into a bad situation.”

“What happened?” I asked, frustrated.

“Well you know I don’t normally gamble on Slinky races, but they told me the Stairmaster was a sure thing. In short, I owe some ninjas a lot of money, and I know they’re famous for deception so I don’t want to go alone.”

“How much money?” I asked

“Twenty dollars.”

“Fuck that. They’ll die before they take twenty whole dollars. Let’s roll.”

And so off we went, I figured we could get this out of the way quickly and I could still make the second half of Brendan’s powerful yet informative class, but time was of the essence. We arrived at their abandoned warehouse hide-out, cleverly disguised as an abandoned warehouse hide-out, and immediately we spotted two ninja guards. As is the custom in situations like these, we quickly decided that we had to beat them up and take their uniforms. Using stealthy and well-choreographed fight moves, we quickly incapacitated them, and wearing their tacky but surprisingly comfortable uniforms, we infiltrated the hide-out.

Of course, it obviously wasn’t that easy. We stumbled into the in-warehouse Starbucks, and inside it four ninjas were conversing over delightful beverages. Wasting no time, we attacked, and before they knew it their bodies were strewn about the floor with so many “Tall” cups.

And so on we continued, finally reaching the door to the fearsome BOSS’s lair. Next to it was a door labeled “PLEASE ENTER BEFORE VISITING BOSS.” Not wanting to be rude, we entered this strange new door. On the other side was…

…the exterior of the building. So now we had to get back into the hide-out, with everyone now alerted to our presence. Realizing that there were also deadly swords inside the uniforms we stole earlier, we shrugged and charged into the building swinging the swords in every direction. Conveniently, we managed to kill all of the remaining ninjas in a few short minutes. It was then that the nefarious BOSS NINJA emerged from his quarters, upset that we also severed the cord that brought him “Two and a Half Men” through the magic telebox. Aside from his nametag, which said “BOSS”, he looked like pretty much every other ninja.

Detailed Rendition of the Ninja Warriors

“What is the meaning of this?” He asked angrily.

“I’ve come to kill you, rather than give you the Twenty dollars I owe you fair and square” Steve said.

“Well,” the evil Ninja leader started, “I admire your honesty and perserverance, but you no longer owe me the money, as the winning Slinky was later disqualified for performance enhancers.”

“Oh. I see. Well then. I guess we’ll just be leaving!”

“That would be best, I think.”

“Sorry about the mess,” I said apologetically

“It is okay, such things happen all the time, sometimes I wonder if this warehouse hide-out is as cleverly hidden as my assistant led me to believe.”

With that, we returned home, our ordeal ending at exactly 11:00.

“I can’t believe I missed Brendan’s class for that,” I said, tired from the violence of the last two hours or so. Steve looked at me gratefully and replied,

“Yeah that was dumb, you probably missed something important.”

Before anything, let me just say that I fucking love Lily Allen with all of my heart. When driving home tonight, she was playing on my iPod (and therefore the car speakers… I’m far too cool for the radio) from my previous chilling. When leaving there I was like “should I keep it on Lily-Shuffle or put on like Rush or something” * Note: Marathoning I Love You, Man and Fanboys (theatrically) in the same day makes Nick listen to Rush continuously. Rush IS variety – more on that later.

Anyway, upon asking myself that difficult question, my iPod (named, and from here on referred to as James Woods) offered me the brilliant introduction to “Never Gonna Happen”, and I was like “well played, Ms. Allen. Well played.” It immediately reminded me how fantastic the new album is. “Never Gonna Happen” in particular is a great one in that it sounds like nothing else I’ve ever heard, and yet each part of it kind of sounds like something I’ve heard. The chorus is quite possibly the easiest way for me to achieve some sort of white-boy head wobble that is meant to be in rhythm. Lyrically it’s clever as hell (as most Lily tends to be) and right in the center of adorable and scathing (as the best Lily tends to be). Then came “Friday Night”, which is one of my favourites from Alright, Still. This, obviously, was a good thing.

But yeah, hi folks. As you can see I have a blog now, which will allow me to show everyone how important I am until some huge publication sees it and immediately offers me a job making assloads of money to write silly pseudo-articles (come on, let’s say how we really feel).

And so this brings me to the subject of today’s installment. To prepare for the release of this year’s decent but ultimately disappointing Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, I recently decided to re-read all seven of the books before its release in July. However, upon getting a chapter or so in to Philosopher’s Stone, I came to a very important conclusion:

FUCK THE FIRST TWO HARRY POTTER BOOKS
This is not to say that they’re BAD books, I wouldn’t even go so far as to say that Stone and Chamber of Secrets are that series’ “Star Wars: Episode I” because they FEEL like Harry Potter books (and those books feel goooood), but they are pretty annoying reads, especially once you’ve already read the series in its entirety, for a few spoiler-laden reasons:

1. EXPOSITION ALWAYS KIND OF SUCKS
It’s true, just like in real life, introductions (even to people we end up really liking) are always awkward and tedious. The Potter books have the unfortunate job of introducing the Dursleys (some of the all-time great unlikable characters in fiction) before, say, Dumbledore or the Weasleys, and as such the unsuspecting reader’s first impression of the Potterverse is indeed Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. Even though Dumbledore is introduced shortly afterward, he does not get nearly the detail that Vernon does so early in the book (which is fine: learning about Dumbledore over the seven books is one of the best things about the series). So yeah, exposition is rarely the most intriguing part of any series, but at least in the Potter books the amazement Harry feels during those first two years is pretty successfully conveyed.

2. WE ALL KNOW THE STORY STARTS IN PRISONER OF AZKABAN

Yeah, Voldemort TRIES to return in the first two books, but in both cases he’s quickly foiled and everyone comes out relatively unscathed. However, in the third book, we discover that Peter Pettigrew (aka Wormtail) is still alive, sold out the dead Potters to Voldemort, and the best part? Right after Harry and crew discover all this (therefore de-guiltifying Sirius Black who Harry is thrillled to realize actually is quite fond of him), Pettigrew ESCAPES to go find and help restore Voldemort. NOW it’s personal, even more than “you killed my parents” personal. It’s like “Holy fuck stop ruining every aspect of my life” personal. Also, we all know that Voldy eventually does come back and so the story really does start in PoA with the revelations about Sirius and Wormtail’s escape. As such, after reading the whole series, the first two books become a bit difficult to read through knowing that they’re kind of “stalling” until things really get going in book 3.

3. VOLDEMORT IS BETTER THAN “KINDA VOLDEMORT”

If there’s one thing Ralph Fiennes has ever definitely taught the world, it’s that Voldemort is a serious badass. As disappointing as the Goblet and Phoenix movies were (again, not BAD, but disappointing), Rafe’s Voldemort has been among the highest of highlights. Similarly, in the books, the appearance of ACTUAL Voldemort is much more engaging than the surrogate Dark Lords we got in Quirreldemort from book one and Angsty Tom Riddle from book two, this ties in to the final point about the first two books, which is that

4. NOBODY DIES.

True, nobody dies in Azkaban either, but it’s the first book where the reader really thinks that the characters could kick the bucket. Azkaban’s ending establishes that from this point forward, shit’s going to go pretty badly before it gets better, and from poor Cedric in book 4 all the way to the eight hundred or so deaths in book 7, bitches start getting KILLED in the Harry Potter books. Of course, again, because these books are mainly expository and because of the young age of the protagonists (and the fact that it’s, like, the beginning of the series), it makes sense as to why Rowling couldn’t just off Hedwig in Chamber of Secrets. Still, we all know death = ratings.

Anyway, THIS update took me a few days to do because of having more important shit to do, but as that’s calmed down, it’ll get more frequent, and since I’m on hour 2 of 9 hours of class, there’ll probably be at least one more today. Woo-hoo.
